Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice of working with environmental energies in order to support activity in the built environment, whether that be a family home, a share house, an office or a retail site. Fundamental principles are Yin and Yang and the interaction of Five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. I have included a more detailed explanation of the Five Elements on the Bazi page. Feng Shui interventions are designed to support the occupants of a house, or the owner and employees of a business, to reach their potential for good health, wealth and relationships. Where the elements are not supportive of the occupants and what they would like to achieve, the Feng Shui practitioner may suggest various corrections to try to mitigate negative effects. Sometimes this involves changing how the space in the home or office is used. Feng Shui is not a magic bullet but positive effects can be achieved, provided the client is willing to make the suggested changes.

Where Feng Shui Fits In

In classical Chinese philosophy, there are three interrelated types of "Luck" that affect each one of us. Luck is a translation and the three lucks might also be called realms or spheres. The three lucks are usually considered to each have about a one-third effect on our lives. Heaven Luck is the capabilities and talents we were born with, based on energetic conditions at the time of our birth. It includes our genetic makeup, personality and even health predispositions we may have inherited from our parents. It is sometimes called Destiny and the practice most associated with it is Chinese astrology. There are two main systems of Chinese astrology and I use one of these - Bazi, also known as Four Pillars of Destiny. The system is not as deterministic as it may sound. Who we are and what we achieve in life also relate to the other froms of luck. However, we do need to live within the parameters of our inborn talents. For example, with my life long propensity towards humanities, it is fortunate no one pushed me to study astrophysics. Human Luck is the luck we create for ourselves and can be summed up in the old adage that you get out of life what you put in. Our values, priorities, the way we interact with others and the work we put in to creating the life we want are all part of Human Luck. There is also an element of reaping what one sows - good dealings with others and hard work will yield good luck, while indolence and poor dealings with others will incur bad luck, not in a direct tit-for-tat way, but over the course of a lifetime. So, understanding and working with our Heaven Luck can increase our Human Luck, just as increasing Human Luck can help in achieving the potential offered by our Heaven Luck.
Earth Luck is the luck we acquire from the physical environment. It is determined by energy flow, both outside, in the wider environment, and inside the built structures we occupy. The sole purpose of the practice of Feng Shui is to improve our Earth Luck. Earth Luck is considered third on the list, after Heaven Luck and Human Luck. Feng Shui changes can not fundamentally transcend Heaven or Human luck - we still have to work within what we were born with and make the most of that in the way we live. But good energy distribution and flow in our environment can support us in many ares of life, including relationships, health and career. So Feng Shui also has a role in assiting us to reach our potential.

Thinking About Feng Shui?

Positive Feng Shui can help maximise the wellbeing and potential of the people who live or work in a home or business premises. In an ideal world we would all live and work in buildings that are perfectly aligned elementally; in reality, many of us do not. When working with existing buildings, Feng Shui practitioners assess the quality and flow of energy (Qi) in a home or business and, if needed, suggest ways to maximise positive energy flow and to help to mitigate negative Feng Shui.
Every situation is different and sometimes the simplest changes can be the most powerful.
Feng Shui can assist in many situations. To name a few:
  • When hunting for a new home. Have a Pre Purchase Consult to assess whether the house or apartment you're looking at will be right for you.
  • When you've bought your new home. Have a full Residential Feng Shui analysis to set up the house or unti to best support the occupants and their activities.
  • When planning a renovation or extension, to assess the potential impact on the Feng Shui and ensure the changes you make will still be supportive.
  • When there are issues affecting family members: inharmonious relationships, work and study issues, and general lack of motivation may be related to poor Feng Shui.
  • When planning to renovate a business premeises, have a Business Feng Shui analysis.
  • When choosing a new business premises.
  • To boost productivity
  • When your business or organisation is struggling to meet its goals.
  • When workplace relations adversely affect productivity.

My Approach to Feng Shui

While the Feng Shui of houses, units and office buildings is ideally thought of and planned for during site selection and while the plans are being drawn up, this is in most cases not what happens. There are, however, many things that can be done to enhance the Feng Shui of existing buildings. I specialise in assessing and enhancing the Feng Shui of existing homes and workplaces. I am by nature and by training a problem-solver, and will work very hard to get the most out of your home or office, in accordance with your lifestyle and what you want to achieve. That's right, what's good Feng Shui for one family or work group may not be the same for another. I will spend time talking with you about what is currently happening - what's working and what's not, as well as your short and longer term goals. Only then will I suggest ways to improve the Feng Shui. The most important thing is that the building supports you and the other occupants to the best degree possible. I will make recommendations aimed to achieve the desired changes. Sometimes trial and error is involved, so I will continue to work with you until the suggested corrections take effect. And rest assured, I will not be recommending the use of any tacky red and gold ornaments! I use several Classical approaches in my Feng Shui consultations. First I assess the outside of the building - whether there are any obstacles to the flow of energy (Qi) to the building, the direction from which the energy flows to the building, and what support the landscape provides to the occupants. To do this I use Landform Feng Shui and Eight Mansions Feng Shui. Then I use Flying Star Feng Shui (Xuan Kong Feixing) to assess the flow of energy inside the building. The different forms of energy (known in this system as Stars) shift or “fly” into different parts (sectors, such as North, South, East and West) of the building. How they are positioned determines the most auspicious areas of a building for different functions, the areas of life they may influence, and how they affect different occupants. This method takes account of time, so the date a building was constructed, and also the date of any major renovations, will help determine the energy flow. Visiting Annual and Monthly Stars also have an impact, so an Annual Update is recommended. Finally, the Feng Shui is personalised to the occupants of the home or key personnel in a business. To do this I use Eight Mansions (to determine each individual's best directions) and their Bazi or Four Pillars of Destiny Chart (to determine with which of the Five Elements each person has particular affinity).
